Step by Step Tutorial - One layer scene

Hey Tea-timers! Another month brings another step-by-step tutorial! This month I'll talk you through how to make this one-layer scene using masking.

You'll need:

You're Engaged stamp set
Masking paper
Masking tape / washi tape or other low-tack tape
Blue and black inks (I used tumbled glass, blueprint sketch, chipped sapphire and black soot distress oxides)
White gouache or acrylic paint and a paintbrush
Blue paint
Copic markers or other colouring medium

Instructions

TIP - The important thing to remember with Masking is that you want to stamp the image you want in the forefront FIRST. Then mask, and stamp the next image, mask, and keep going until you reach the back of your scene.

1. Stamp the car from the You're Engaged set on to the centre of an A2 panel of white card.
2. Stamp the same image on to some Masking paper, fussy cut, and place over the car.
3. Stamp the two cat passengers, with the bottom portion overlapping the masked off car.
4. Place Masking tape about a third of the way down the page, covering the bottom portion.
5. Using blender brushes or foams, ink blend the sky above the masking tape.
6. Add some white gouache or other white paint to an acrylic block and water it down slightly. Using a paintbrush, flick the paint off the edge of the block on to the night sky. Repeat with blue paint (I used a watercolour set).
7. Remove the masking tape. Draw a faint diagonal line using a pencil from each bottom corner, up to the "horizon" line, to look like a road disappearing in the distance. To each side of the line, colour in green shades (I used Copics in G99, G67, G17). Inside the lines, colour the road in grey shades (I used Copics in C5, C3, C1 and C0, concentrating the darker colours under the car to give a shadow).
8. Remove the masking paper from the car and colour the car and its passengers, I used R89, R39, R37, R35 for the main body, C3, C1 and C0 for the bumpers and R05 for the brake lights. The tyres were coloured in 100 and N7. The cats were coloured using W5, W3 and W1 (left cat) and C7, C5 and C3 (right cat).
9. Once the sky is properly dry, dust with anti static powder, and stamp the sentiment using embossing ink. Add bright white embossing powder and heat set.
10. To finish the card, matte on to a black card base which is slightly larger than your scene.

I really hope you found this tutorial helpful, and I look forward to seeing you next time!
